'Overrated' Rickie Fowler clinches Players Championship with playoff win

Rickie Fowler wins a three-man playoff to clinch the Players Championship in a week that saw his fellow professionals label him overrated.

Rickie Fowler edged out Sergio Garcia and Kevin Kisner in a three-way playoff to clinch the Players Championship in a thrilling conclusion in Florida this morning.

The American carded a final-round 67, holing an eagle at the 16th, either side of two birdies, to finish on 12-under-par for the tournament and force a tie-break.

He then edged out compatriot Kisner in sudden death with a birdie at 17, after Garcia was eliminated following three holes in the playoff, to win just his second PGA Tour title - and first since 2012.

Victory was the perfect riposte by the 26-year-old in a week that saw him and Ian Poulter voted the most overrated players on the Tour by their fellow professionals.

Ben Martin and Bill Haas finished two shots off the pace on 11 under, with Rory Sabbatini and Kevin Na two strokes further back.

British hopefuls Rory McIlroy, who shot a final-round 70, and Jamie Donaldson finished up on eight-under par, with the latter matching Fowler's 67.
