The 23-year-old from San Antonio, Texas carded a nine-under-par round of 63 on the Arnold Palmer Private course at PGA West - one of three venues hosting the pro-am tournament.

He leads Ryan Palmer, Justin Hicks, Daniel Summerhays and Charley Hoffman, who all came in eight-under-par for their opening rounds.

Charlie Wi, Zach Johnson, Matt Every, Russell Knox and Hudson Swafford complete the top 10, although Bill Haas and Brendon Todd also posted seven-under but miss out on the top page.

The cut is currently projected at three-under, with Nicolas Colsaerts (E) and Brandt Snedeker (E) among those needing to get into the low numbers on their second trip around La Quinta.
