Rory McIlroy has become the new world number one following his two-shot victory at the Honda Classic in Florida.

The 22-year-old has become the second-youngest top-ranked player in history behind Tiger Woods.

McIlroy scrambled for pars during the back nine to hold off a late surge from Tiger Woods, who carded an eight-under par 62 in his final round at Palm Beach.

The Irishman's playing partner Tom Gillis, who started the day one shot adrift of the Irishman, finished tied-second with Woods on ten-under par.

World number three Lee Westwood finished the tournament on eight-under par, which was good enough for a fourth-placed finish.

Victory means that McIlroy, who posted a final round 69, usurps the absent Luke Donald at the top of the PGA rankings.
