The Northern Irishman will become the world number one if he wins the event at Palm Beach Gardens.

A round of 66 has seen the 22-year-old top the leaderboard on 11-under ahead of American pair Tom Gillis and Harris English.

"This is where I want to be," said McIlroy. "This is why I play golf, to put myself in contention to win tournaments and try to become the best player in the world."

Overnight leader Justin Rose has moved down to fourth on seven-under, while Graeme McDowell is on four-under.

Tiger Woods has taken a share of 18th after a round of 69 put the former world number one on two-under, with Lee Westwood one shot further back.
