Martin Kaymer retains lead at Players Championship

Martin Kaymer finishes day two of the Players Championship on 12-under-par to lead the tournament by one shot.

Martin Kaymer retained his lead in the Players Championship by shooting a 69 on day two at TPC Sawgrass.

The German was unable to repeat his course-tying heroics of the previous day, but a solid display as the leader means that he heads into the weekend on 12-under-par.

Despite holding a five-shot advantage at one stage on Friday, Kaymer saw his lead reduced by Jordan Spieth, who finished the day just one stroke behind the former world number one.

Spieth made it 36 holes without a dropped shot at Sawgrass as he stormed up the leaderboard thanks to a round of 66.

Russell Henley is currently third on eight-under, while Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Lee Westwood are among some high-profile names in a group on six-under.

Rory McIlroy holed a putt on the 18th to just avoid being cut from the tournament, but Phil Mickelson was sent home after finishing the day on one-over.
