Angel Cabrera earns one-shot lead in Wells Fargo Championship

Angel Cabrera climbs to six-under-par to lead the Wells Fargo Championship by one shot after the first round.

Angel Cabrera recorded a round of 66 to lead the Wells Fargo Championship by one shot at the end of the opening day.

The two-time Major winner, who has not recorded victory on the PGA Tour since the 2009 Masters, raced up the leaderboard early in the day thanks to four straight birdies on the back nine.

Cabrera's ability to make par in the closing stages of his round proved to be crucial as he secured the advantage over his rivals by finishing on six-under after 18 holes at Quail Hollow.

Martin Flores and Phil Mickelson are one shot behind the leader, despite the latter twice pulling level with Cabrera in the second half of his promising opening round.

Jonathan Byrd, Stewart Cink and Webb Simpson are currently on four-under, while former world number ones Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy are just one shot further back ahead of day two.
