Carl Pettersson has a one-shot lead after day one of the USPGA Championship at the Ocean Course in South Carolina.

Six birdies helped the Swede card a round of 66 to end the opening round on six-under-par.

It was a good day for Rory McIlroy as the Northern Irishman hit five birdies to put him a shot further back with American Gary Woodland, Spain's Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano and another Swede, Alex Noren.

Defending champion Keegan Bradley is among a group of eight players on four-under, including 1991 winner John Daly.

Tiger Woods, KJ Choi and Justin Rose are currently on three-under.

However, world number one Luke Donald endured a difficult time out on the course as a double bogey on the 17th left the Englishman on two-over.
