Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are both beaten in the first round of the WGC World Matchplay in Arizona.

Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods have both been knocked out in the first round of the WGC World Matchplay in Arizona.

World number one McIlroy was beaten 1-down by Ireland's Shane Lowry, while world number two Woods succumbed 2 and 1 to fellow American Charles Howell III.

Keegan Bradley and Lee Westwood were also beaten by Marcus Fraser and Rafael Cabrera-Bello respectively in a surprising opening round at Dove Mountain.

However, Graeme McDowell, Bubba Watson, Louis Oosthuizen and Justin Rose all made it through.

Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar, Ian Poulter and Luke Donald also booked their places in the last 32 of the tournament.
