Rory McIlroy admits that he was wrong to walk away from the Honda Classic midway through the second round with toothache.

World number one Rory McIlroy has admitted that he made a mistake when he decided to abandon the Honda Classic midway through the second round.

The Northern Irishman withdrew from the tournament in Florida without finishing his ninth hole following a disastrous start, which left him seven shots off the pace.

The 23-year-old later revealed that he had been suffering from wisdom tooth pain, but now insists that he should have continued.

"It was a reactive decision," McIlroy told Sports Illustrated. "What I should have done is take my drop, chip it on, try to make a five and play my hardest on the back nine, even if I shot 85.

"What I did was not good for the tournament, not good for the kids and the fans who were out there watching me. It was not the right thing to do."

Michael Thompson was the eventual winner of the tournament.
