New world number one Rory McIlroy has insisted that he can win more tournaments this year in a bid to retain the world number one spot he reclaimed last week.
The 26-year-old returned to the top of golf's world rankings despite not playing since the PGA Championship as Jordan Spieth slipped down the order as a result of missing the cut at The Barclays.
However, McIlroy knows that reigning Masters and US Open champion Spieth and PGA champion Jason Day are hot on his heels.
"I feel I am holding this ranking based on what I did last year. But hopefully I can get another couple of wins before the end of the year and I feel I am playing well enough to do that," McIlroy told reporters.
"I feel we (McIlroy, Spieth and Day) are pretty close. I feel the level I played at last year, they saw that and attained that.
"It is about trying to set that bar a bit higher each year. That is probably what we will see over the next few years if guys keep pushing each other."
McIlroy is playing at this week's Deutsche Bank Open in Boston.
