Paul Lawrie has confirmed that he will miss the US Open to concentrate on gaining more Ryder Cup qualifying points.
Lawrie is set to skip the tournament in San Francisco to prepare for the BMW International Open in Germany the following week.
The 1999 Open champion said: "If you know you can't compete in a particular tournament, then why go?
"My record in the US Open is not good. I understand that it is a Major but I feel I have more of a chance of playing well at the BMW International Open the week after.
"I know people are going to be surprised but I stand more chance of earning Ryder Cup points at the BMW in Cologne than in the US Open in California."
This year's Ryder Cup will be held at the Medinah Country Club in Illinois.
