The first American to be officially crowned as world number one, Fred Couples, is awarded a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

Former Masters champion Fred Couples has been awarded a place in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

The American has recorded 15 victories on the PGA Tour, including a famous triumph at Augusta in 1992.

Couples, who was the first American to reach the top of the world rankings, revealed his pride after learning that he will be inducted into the Hall of Fame next year.

"What a great day for me," said the 52-year-old. "I guess I won a popularity vote here.

"For me, it's truly an honour. I hope a lot of people - I don't want to say respect my game - but understand that to be in the Hall of Fame you've got to be a very, very good player.

"I don't consider myself to be a great player, but I think I've been a very good player. I've played great at times."

Couples has also appeared in the Ryder Cup five times during his career.
