Matthew Fitzpatrick has edged out Jordan Spieth in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage.

The Englishman has struggled with a neck injury in recent months, hindering his efforts to back up his US Open triumph last June.

However, Fitzpatrick now has a regular PGA Tour title to his name having defeated Spieth at the third extra hole, initially surviving putts which went agonisingly off target for his American rival at the previous playoff holes.

At the third, the second time that they had played the 18th, Fitzpatrick put his approach to within a foot of the hole, and Spieth was unable to convert from nearly 38 feet to keep his hopes alive.

In regulation play, Spieth posted a final-round 66 in comparison to Fitzpatrick's 68, the latter registering birdies on 15 and 16 to move level with last year's champion.

Patrick Cantlay, the other member of the final group, shot a fourth-round 68 to secure a third place on his own, helped by a birdie putt on the last.

Xander Schauffele birdied three of his final four holes to earn fourth spot, with Sahith Theegala and Hayden Buckley sharing fifth position.

Meanwhile, Scottie Scheffler could only record a final-round 70 to finish in 11th spot, missing out on the chance to reclaim the world number spot status.

Jon Rahm, the current incumbent, was able to shoot a 68 to end the tournament a shot further back in a tie for 15th alongside Sam Burns, Rickie Fowler and Tommy Fleetwood.
