The European Tour confirms that the ongoing BMW PGA Championship will be postponed for the remainder of Thursday and Friday following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

The European Tour group have confirmed that the BMW PGA Championship has been postponed until further notice following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Britain's longest-ever reigning monarch passed away at Balmoral at the age of 96 on Thursday afternoon, bringing an end to her unprecedented 70-year reign.

Many sporting events are expected to be postponed over the coming days as the nation enters an official period of mourning, and confirmation has now arrived that no play will take place at the BMW PGA Championship on Friday.

Flags at Wentworth will be flown at half mast and the course and practice facilities will be closed on Friday, with a further announcement on the eventual resumption of play expected in due course.

"On behalf of our members and everyone connected with the European Tour group and the BMW PGA Championship, it is with great sadness that we have learned of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II," read a statement from the European Tour group.

"She truly was an inspiration to people the world over. Out of respect for Her Majesty and the Royal Family, play has been suspended at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club for the remainder of Thursday and flags at Wentworth Club will be lowered to half-mast.

"Furthermore, no play will take place at the BMW PGA Championship on Friday and the golf course and practice facilities will be closed. Further updates on the resumption of play will be provided in due course.

"Our deepest sympathies and condolences are with the Royal Family at this time."

The BMW PGA Championship began on Thursday, with Tommy Fleetwood, Andy Sullivan and Viktor Hovland leading the way on eight-under when play was postponed.
