Rory McIlroy surprised by return of Davis Love III

Rory McIlroy admits that it is a surprise to see Davis Love III named US Ryder Cup captain for a second time.

Rory McIlroy has expressed his surprise with the appointment of Davis Love III as the USA's Ryder Cup captain for the 2016 event.

It was confirmed earlier this week that Love, who was captain when Europe came from 10-6 behind on the final day to win at Medinah in 2012, would take charge once again, and McIlroy believes that the Americans have reacted strangely to their loss at Gleneagles last year.

"It came as a big shock when they announced yesterday Davis was going to be the next US captain," the world number one told reporters. "It will be great to see Davis and Darren [Clarke] go head-to-head at Hazeltine and they will be formidable opponents.

"But then also I'm surprised, and I feel they're overdoing it with the setting up of a task force and also talking about all the changes they want to bring in.

"It's been said by a few players since we won at Gleneagles that it's not rocket science why Europe have won the last three Ryder Cups and eight of the past 10."

Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker and Rickie Fowler were among the players on an American taskforce which helped recommend Love for the captaincy.
