Three-time Formula 1 champion Sir Jack Brabham dies at the age of 88 in his Australian Gold Coast home after losing his battle with liver disease.

Three-time Formula 1 champion Sir Jack Brabham has died at the age of 88 after losing his battle with liver disease.

The Australian sportsman, who won the world title in 1959, 1960 and 1966, passed away at his home on the Gold Coast.

Brabham's son David said in a statement: "He lived an incredible life, achieving more than anyone would ever dream of. He will continue to live on through the astounding legacy he leaves behind."

The successful driver, who made his Grand Prix debut in 1955, was knighted for his services to motorsport in 1979.

Brabham is the only man in history to have designed, built and driven a title-winning car following his victory in 1966 with the rear-engined BT19.
