Didier Drogba donates £800k to mining victims

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba donates £800,000 to the families of those who died in Tuesday's mining tragedy in Turkey.

Former Chelsea striker Didier Drogba has donated £800,000 to the families of those who died in Tuesday's mining tragedy in Turkey.

301 people perished in Soma earlier this week as a result of the country's worst-ever mining disaster.

Drogba - now at Turkish outfit Galatasaray - and his teammates donned helmets in memory of the victims ahead of Saturday's clash with Kayseri Erciyesspor.

Now, due to his role as UN ambassador of goodwill, the 36-year-old has pledged to do everything in his power to help and has started by giving a €1m donation.

"I am a UN ambassador of goodwill and I will do all that I can to help the people in Soma," he told reporters.

"But I don't want anyone to use my name. I'm not someone who will promote himself in such issues. I don't need this sort of self-promotion."

Earlier today, it was reported that up to 24 people had been arrested in connection to the fire, which could not be extinguished until Thursday.
