McLaren could go back to 2012 car

McLaren could revert to 2012's F1 car if performances of the new MP4-28 don't improve.

McLaren could revert back to their 2012 car to improve their performances after a disappointing start to the 2013 season.

The British team could only manage ninth and 11th at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix at the weekend, and new driver Sergio Perez, who replaced Lewis Hamilton at the team, said that they could ditch the new MP4-28.

"We will try everything to be back in contention," Perez said during preparation for this weekend's Malaysia Grand Prix.

"I think the car has potential and we have to try to understand and take the maximum out of it. But we want to win this year and we will do anything in our hearts to go back to winning."

Perez's teammate Jenson Button, who won the final race of 2012 in Brazil, wasn't so keen on taking a step back.

"The important thing is to keep working and seeing what you can do," said 2009 world champion Button.

"I feel this weekend we're not going to be winning the Grand Prix but I feel we can find a step forward. It's about developing as much as we can as quick as we can."

This weekend's race begins at 8am on Sunday and you can follow live text coverage here on Sports Mole from 7.30am.
