FIA confirms Jules Bianchi has "severe head injury"

The FIA announces that Jules Bianchi is undergoing surgery for a severe head injury sustained during the Japanese Grand Prix.

The FIA has confirmed that Jules Bianchi is undergoing surgery after sustaining a "severe head injury" during the Japanese Grand Prix this morning.

The Marussia driver is believed to have collided with a recovery vehicle that was tending to Adrian Sutil's Sauber after the German had run wide at Suzuka.

Formula 1's governing body announced that the 25-year-old has undergone a CT scan to determine the extent of the injury, and is now having surgery before a planned move to intensive care later.

French media reported earlier that the driver's father said that his son is in a critical condition as a result of the crash, which caused the race to be cut short.
