Preview: Rotherham United vs. Wycombe Wanderers - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday's Championship clash between Rotherham United and Wycombe Wanderers, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Rotherham United welcome Wycombe Wanderers to the New York Stadium on Monday afternoon looking to move closer to edging outside of the Championship relegation zone.

While the Millers are four points adrift of safety with several games in hand, the visitors are nine points behind 21st-placed Coventry City.

Still requiring at least four wins to have any chance of survival in the second tier, the majority of Wycombe supporters will feel that their improved run of form has come far too late in the campaign.

However, claiming seven points from a possible 12 has ensured that the Chairboys remain in the conversation ahead of a pivotal contest in their battle to avoid a return to League One.

After posting a 1-0 triumph over Blackburn Rovers on Friday afternoon, Gareth Ainsworth's side have now kept three clean sheets in four games, a far cry from the team which were shipping goals with regularity at the beginning of the year.

Finding the back of the net at the other end of the pitch remains an issue, although Fred Onyedinma has stepped up to the mark to net two crucial efforts in recent games.

While Ainsworth will be looking to take advantage of a home fixture against Luton Town at the end of next week, the result of that contest will mean little if his side fall to defeat in Yorkshire.

A number of positive coronavirus cases on two separate occasions means that Rotherham have been left to play 11 matches in little more than a month.

Paul Warne will be content that his team's fate remains in their own hands, but he must find a way to handle the relentless schedule over the coming weeks.

Despite six points coming from four matches, the 1-0 reverse at Millwall on Friday was Rotherham's seventh defeat in just nine encounters.

However, five of their next six fixtures are to be played at their home ground, giving the club every opportunity to close down Coventry and the teams immediately above the Sky Blues.

Team News

Rotherham will have to make do without Richard Wood, who is serving a suspension after his red card against Millwall.

Matthew Olosunde could come back into the starting lineup at right wing-back if he has recovered from a hamstring issue, leaving Wes Harding to be named in the back three.

Ben Wiles may be recalled on the opposite flank, taking the place of Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Ryan Giles.

Wycombe midfielder Dennis Adeniran is expected to deputise for Dominic Gape, who sustained a calf injury on Friday afternoon.

Barring any more fitness issues, the remainder of Ainsworth's starting lineup could stay the same.

Rotherham United possible starting lineup:
Johansson; Ihiekwe, MacDonald, Harding; Olosunde, Wing, Barlaser, Crooks, Wiles; Smith, Ladapo

Wycombe Wanderers possible starting lineup:
Stockdale; McCarthy, Grimmer, Knight, Jacobson, Onyedinma; Muskwe, Adeniran, Thompson, Mehmeti; Ikpeazu

We say: Rotherham United 2-1 Wycombe Wanderers

Against one of their direct rivals, Wycombe have little choice but to push for all three points in Yorkshire. Nevertheless, with the added motivation of remaining well ahead of their opponents, we are backing Rotherham to edge a close contest.
