Stephen Ward backs Stale Solbakken to 'freshen up' Wolverhampton Wanderers

Stephen Ward welcomes new manager Stale Solbakken and believes that Wolverhampton Wanderers were in desperate need of "freshening up".

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Stephen Ward believes that a change in the managerial staff was "needed" at Molineux.

The West Midlands outfit appointed new boss Stale Solbakken earlier this month after the club were relegated to the Championship under interim coach Terry Connor.

"It's probably what we needed," Ward told BBC WM. "It did need freshening up. Getting relegated was a big wake-up call for a lot of people at the club.

"When Mick McCarthy departed, it was more the timing that shocked everybody. That's why the latter part of the season was really tough for us all.

"But there's no better way of freshening things up than bringing in somebody from a different culture and a different background. He'll want his own style, to do things in his own way."

Wolves will compete in the second tier of English football alongside former Premier League outfits Blackburn Rovers and Bolton Wanderers.
