Gary Caldwell: 'We needed a positive result'

Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell rues that his relegation-threatened side failed to pick up a positive result from their match against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Wigan Athletic boss Gary Caldwell has conceded that his side needed a positive result from yesterday's clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers to give them hope of survival in the Championship.

Benik Afobe scored the only goal of the game to fire Kenny Jackett's men to victory at the DW Stadium and leave the Latics on the brink of relegation to League One, which could occur on Tuesday if Rotherham United avoid defeat to Reading.

Caldwell has declared that he was pleased with the effort and display of his players, but has lamented the fact that they could not turn the performance into crucial points.

He told Sky Sports News: "At this stage of the season it's results that you're looking for. The performance for the first 25 minutes is something I'm sure I'll look back on in the future as the way I want my team to play and express themselves.

"I thought we were excellent, we played with intensity in both defence and attack, we kept the ball. We caused them a lot of problems, our shape caused them problems, and we created good opportunities.

"They weren't clear-cut opportunities, and that's something we need to get better at when we're controlling a game - punishing the opposition. In a few days I might be able to look back and be happy, but the result was the most important thing and we didn't get that."

Wigan play Brentford at Griffin Park on the final day of the season.
