Football Association to investigate Dave Whelan comments

The Football Association announce that they are investigating anti-semitic comments that have been made by Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan.

Wigan Athletic chairman Dave Whelan will be investigated by the Football Association after making comments that could be seen as anti-semitic.

During an interview with The Guardian earlier this week, 77-year-old Whelan made derogatory comments about Jewish people and comments relating to the word "chink", which resulted in criticism from anti-racism group Kick it Out as well as a backlash on social media.

An FA statement read: "The FA is very concerned to read about the comments that have been attributed to Dave Whelan.

"We take all forms of discrimination seriously. As with all such cases, this will be dealt with as a priority.

"The investigation is already under way and The FA's Governance Division have written to Mr. Whelan. He has three working days to respond."

Earlier this week, Whelan appointed Malky Mackay, who is still under investigation by the FA for allegedly sending offensive text messages and emails during his time at Cardiff City, as the Championship club's new manager.
