Preview: Wigan Athletic vs. Barnsley

Sports Mole peers ahead to the Championship match on Tuesday night between Wigan Athletic and Barnsley.

High on confidence after continuing their defence of the FA Cup on Saturday, Wigan Athletic next host Barnsley in the Championship on Tuesday night.

The Latics advanced to the quarter-finals of the cup with victory away at Premier League side Cardiff City and will now look to win one of their games in hand on the teams around them in the race for a playoff spot.

Manager Uwe Rosler will make plenty of changes for the hosts' third game in seven days and is definitely without Saturday's match-winner Ben Watson, who had to be substituted with a knock.

Visitors Barnsley are winless in four games, drawing three of those 2-2, and lie five points shy of safety in the bottom three.

The Tykes do have games in hand on teams around them, though, and can reduce the deficit to those above the drop zone by picking up something at the DW Stadium.

Jacob Mellis is unavailable as he serves the last game of his three-match ban, while Paddy McCourt is pushing for a return to the starting lineup after impressing from the bench against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday.

The reverse fixture between these two sides was way back on the opening day of the season when Wigan annihilated Barnsley 4-0.
