Wigan Athletic winger Callum McManaman has been ruled out of the European Under-21 Championships with an ankle injury.
The Latics have confirmed that the 22-year-old will be out of action for the next three months after suffering the blow during their 4-1 defeat to Arsenal, which confirmed relegation to the Championship.
McManaman was poised to represent England for the first time at Under-21 level in a major tournament when he was called into Stuart Pearce's 22-man squad ahead of this summer's competition.
Following the results of a scan on his ankle injury, it has been confirmed that the winger, who previously came under fire for a reckless challenge on Newcastle United's Massadio Haidara, will play no part in the Euros.
Wigan manager Roberto Martinez expressed concerns over McManaman's reputation following his unpunished tackle on Haidara, but the winger has impressed during the closing stages of the campaign.
