West Bromwich Albion are close to signing former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka on a free transfer, according to reports.

Striker Nicolas Anelka is expected at West Bromwich Albion today ahead of a potential move to The Hawthorns, according to reports.

The Frenchman is available on a free transfer after ending the season with Juventus, and it appears as though the 34-year-old's preference is to return to England.

According to the Express & Star, the former Chelsea forward is due at the club's training ground later this afternoon, with a medical expected to take place should Anelka agree personal terms.

Anelka would become Steve Clarke's first signing of the summer, as he looks to build on the club's eighth-place finish in the Premier League last season.
