Dan Ashworth shock candidate for FA post

Dan Ashworth has emerged as a surprise contender for the FA technical director position.

West Bromwich Albion's technical director Dan Ashworth has emerged as a surprise contender for same the job with the England national team.

Ashworth, 41, joins the likes of Steve Wigley, who is already in the England set-up as the Under-21 assistant to Stuart Pearce, and head of elite development Gareth Southgate on the list of potential suitors.

West Brom boss Roy Hodgson looks likely to miss out to Harry Redknapp in the hunt for the England managerial position but Albion are set to deal with interest from the FA for Ashworth.

Chelsea considered Ashworth as a successor to former director of football Frank Arnesen and he has a glowing reputation in the eyes of Premier League clubs.

After a indifferent playing career at Norwich City, Ashworth joined the Baggies in 2004, working in their academy before being made sporting and technical director in 2007.
