Late Atdhe Nuhi equaliser denies Watford title glory

An injury-time equaliser from Sheffield Wednesday striker Atdhe Nuhiu denies Watford the Championship title.

Watford have missed out on the Championship title after conceding a last-minute equaliser to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Hornets look on course to return to the Premier League in style, but a 91st-minute goal from Atdhe Nuhiu allowed Bournemouth, who eased past Charlton Athletic, the chance to move past them at the top of the standings.

With promotion already assured, Watford started off positively at Vicarage Road and only some desperate defending from the Owls prevented Miguel Layun from handing his team an early lead.

Troy Deeney also came close before being denied by Chris Kirkland as he attempted to round the goalkeeper, before the former Liverpool stopper was in the action again to save from Vydra.

However, just after the midway point of the half, the Czech forward made no mistake when the ball fell kindly for him after another Kirkland save and he was able to nod into an empty net from eight yards.

Wednesday had barely offered anything in their attacking third, and they almost fell two behind when Deeney played in Ikechi Anya but his shot from an acute angle hit the side-netting.

After the restart, Watford were soon back on the offensive and moments after Layun had driven wide, Deeney directed a header over the crossbar.

However, with the score at 1-0, Wednesday were always in the game and it took a last-ditch challenge from Hornets defender Gabriele Angella to prevent the Owls from getting back on level terms.

It appeared as though Watford were going to see out the game, but one minute into added-on time, Nudiu forced the ball into the net from six yards to deny Watford a memorable day in front of their home crowd.
