Oscar Tabarez: 'The best team won'

Uruguay boss Oscar Tabarez admits that his team were outplayed in the 3-1 defeat to Costa Rica in their World Cup opener.

Oscar Tabarez has admitted that his Uruguay team were outplayed in Saturday's Group D defeat to Costa Rica this evening.

Edinson Cavani had fired the Uruguayans into a slender half-time lead from the penalty spot, before a second-half blitz saw the Costa Ricans register a shock 3-1 win.

Speaking to reporters at full time, Tabarez praised Jorge Pinto's side but warned that his team would be ready to make amends by beating England on Thursday.

"I don't know what Costa Rica's limit is, but today they played well. They were tactically better than us, which reflects well on their coach and players.

"When they took the lead, they gave us space and let us play where we couldn't do them any harm. Now we're going to try and get back on track against England."

Arsenal's Joel Campbell fired Costa Rica back on level terms, before further strikes from Oscar Duarte and Marco Urena sealed the win.

Maxi Pereira will miss Thursday's clash with England after receiving a red card for a challenge on Campbell in the closing stages.
