Swansea City progress against under-par Everton

Goals from Nathan Dyer, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Marvin Emnes give Swansea City a 3-0 win over Everton in the third round of the League Cup.

Swansea City recorded their first win in three games as they beat Everton 3-0 to progress to the fourth round of the League Cup tonight.

Gylfi Sigurdsson had the first chance of the game for a dominant Swansea side as he curled a 20-yard effort just wide of the upright.

Everton slowly came back into the game though, and two of Roberto Martinez's summer signings almost combined for the opener, but Gerhard Tremmel denied Christian Atsu after the winger was played through on goal by a precise Samuel Eto'o pass.

Tim Howard then denied Jefferson Montero at the other end from a tight angle, before Tremmel was called into action twice more to deny Antolin Alcaraz and Aiden McGeady's tame efforts.

Just as Everton looked to be gaining a foothold in the game, Nathan Dyer connected with Montero's cross from close range to put the home side ahead after 28 minutes.

Everton looked to respond immediately and Muhamed Besic curled a shot wide before Ashley Williams deflected Atsu's strike behind as the home side held on until the break.

Romelu Lukaku was introduced at the break and almost made an immediate impact, but after skipping away from Federico Fernandez, he blasted his shot narrowly over the bar.

Swansea doubled their lead shortly after the hour mark when Sigurdsson was left with a simple finish after Sylvain Distin could only nod Jonjo Shelvey's cross onto his own bar.

Everton's misery was compounded three minutes from time when substitute Marvin Emnes scored a solo effort to make it 3-0.

Darren Gibson was handed Everton's best chance of the night in injury time, but the midfielder skewed a close-range shot wide of the post to round off a disappointing night for the Toffees.
