Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United are reportedly the frontrunners to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson this summer.

Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United have reportedly emerged as the frontrunners to sign Atalanta BC midfielder Ederson.

The 24-year-old joined Atalanta in the summer of 2022 after spending just six months with fellow Italian side Salernitana.

Ederson quickly established himself in the Atalanta side, featuring in 35 league matches during the 2022-23 season.

The Brazilian has continued to play a prominent role in the current campaign, having chipped in with six goals and one assist in 40 competitive matches.

Ederson played the full duration in Thursday's stunning 3-0 victory over Liverpool in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-finals.

Having put in a number of impressive performances this season, Ederson is now attracting interest from the Premier League ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to Calcio Mercato, Tottenham and Newcastle are leading the race to secure Ederson's signature ahead of the 2024-25 season.

The report suggests that Tottenham and Newcastle are best placed to sign the Atalanta man despite facing competition from Italian giants Juventus.

With Ederson under contract until June 2026, Atalanta are only prepared to sanction a sale if their €35m (£30m) valuation is met.

Premier League duo looking for midfield reinforcements

Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou can currently call upon the likes of Yves Bissouma, Pape Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

However, Hojbjerg is widely expected to leave the club in the summer, having started just six of his 31 Premier League appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are preparing to rival Spurs as they look to reinforce their engine room following a tumultuous campaign.

Eddie Howe has seen his squad hampered by injury throughout the campaign, while he has been unable to call upon Sandro Tonali due to a 10-month ban for breaching Italian betting regulations.

Having seen the depth of his squad tested this season, the Newcastle boss ultimately wants to avoid similar problems next term, especially with the Magpies hoping to secure European football.
