Napoli and Ajax will both reportedly look to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen this month rather than waiting until his contract expires in the summer.

Napoli and Ajax are both reportedly lining up January moves for Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen.

The Belgian international's future in North London remains up in the air with less than six months left on his contract, which expires at the end of the season.

Vertonghen is now permitted to speak to foreign clubs regarding a pre-contract agreement in the summer, and The Telegraph reports that Napoli and Ajax plan to get in contact with him.

Napoli are understood to have renewed their interest after failing with a bid for the centre-back last summer, with new manager Gennaro Gattuso keen to strengthen his defensive options.

Ajax, meanwhile, are eyeing a return for their former player after Daley Blind was diagnosed with a heart condition last week.

Vertonghen made 220 appearances for the Dutch outfit before joining Spurs in 2012, having come through the ranks at the Johan Cruyff ArenA.

Both Napoli and Ajax will reportedly push to complete a deal this month rather than waiting until the summer, with Spurs willing to consider cashing in on the 32-year-old rather than losing him for nothing.
