On this day: Ledley King scores Premier League's fastest goal

Back on this day in 2000, Tottenham Hotspur's Ledley King scored the fastest goal in the history of the Premier League.

As Ledley King ascended through the ranks at Tottenham Hotspur, he started to draw comparisons with the late Bobby Moore.

However, while World Cup winner Moore had many attributes, one of them was not scoring goals. In fairness, centre-back King was also not known for finding the net on a consistent basis.

He was handed his debut in 1999 under the management of George Graham, who used the youngster primarily as a midfielder, largely because Sol Campbell and Chris Perry had formed a partnership at the heart of the Spurs defence.

When the North Londoners travelled to Bradford City 13 years ago today, he had yet to open his goalscoring account. At Valley Parade, though, it would take him just 10 seconds to break his duck.

Tottenham got the game underway and after a long pass forward was cleared only as far as King, he saw his low shot deflected from 25 yards out beyond a helpless Matt Clarke in the home goal.

The previous record for the fastest Premier League goal was jointly held by Dwight Yorke and Chris Sutton on 13 seconds, but King was able to shave three seconds off their efforts.

The game would go on to be a memorable one as the hosts equalised in the ninth minute courtesy of Jamie Lawrence, who rose highest inside the penalty area to convert a corner from Dean Windass.

Spurs regained the lead with 23 minutes on the clock when an unmarked Campbell managed to guide his header into the net and then, in the 54th minute, Les Ferdinand squared a pass for his strike partner Chris Armstrong to seemingly put the match beyond the home team.

Jim Jefferies's men rallied, though, and with 21 minutes left to play Windass bundled the ball in from close range to reduce the arrears.

The Bantams continued to push for a share of the spoils and their pressure was eventually rewarded in the closing stages when Italian frontman Benito Carbone volleyed the ball out of Neil Sullivan's reach.
