Gylfi Sigurdsson relishing central role

Gylfi Sigurdsson hopes to make a bigger impact in his second season at Spurs and feels he can do so if he continues to play in his preferred central role.

Gylfi Sigurdsson is confident that the Tottenham Hotspur fans will see the best of him this season if he continues to be utilised in his favoured number 10 role.

The Icelandic international joined Spurs last year following an impressive loan spell at Swansea City, but he was less prolific for the Lillywhites as a makeshift winger, not netting in the Premier League until February.

Andre Villas-Boas employed the 23-year-old behind lone striker Roberto Soldado in their 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Sunday, and Sigurdsson has admitted that he feels most comfortable operating in that more advanced, central position.

"It was nice to play there again, I enjoy playing there," he told the Tottenham Journal. "It's taken a bit of a longer time that I wanted [to settle] here at Tottenham and hopefully I can do well this season.

"Hopefully I'll stay there behind the striker because [Roberto] Soldado and Jermain [Defoe] are top strikers and it's quite easy and good to play behind them.

"As long as I'm playing I don't really mind, but that's one of my better positions - playing behind the striker. I think that's probably what I prefer but if the gaffer wants me to play on the left or right side then I'm quite happy to play there."

Sigurdsson scored seven times in 49 appearances in his debut Spurs season, but started less than half the games in which he featured.
