City had the best of the possession throughout the half but rarely troubled Spurs' goal.

David Silva had an early chance for the champions, but the shot was easily stopped by Brad Friedel.

Caulker's goal came off a Tom Huddlestone free kick, conceded by Sergio Aguero for a tackle on Aaron Lennon.

The hosts could have had a penalty just minutes later, when William Gallas appeared to handle to ball in the box, but referee Michael Oliver turned down their appeals.

Carlos Tevez had a chance to level the scores towards the end of the half, but struck the ball straight to Friedel.
