Southampton boss Nigel Adkins insists that Sunday's 2-0 win over Newcastle is "thoroughly deserved".

Southampton manager Nigel Adkins has insisted that Sunday's 2-0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League was "thoroughly deserved".

Adam Lallana and Gaston Ramirez were on the scoresheet at St Mary's as the Saints moved out of the relegation zone with a second straight victory.

"It was a thoroughly deserved win and we kept a clean sheet as well," said Adkins.

"There is a momentum with us and we are playing some really good football consistently through a game. The standard of play as individuals and as a team have improved all the time."

Southampton can make it three wins in a row on Wednesday when they host Norwich City.
