Graziano Pelle had a couple of early chances for the visitors, but his first attempt was blocked by Shaun Williams before the follow-up went well wide.

Southampton continued to press, almost resulting in an opening for Shane Long, but a deep ball was cleared by the defenders before the new signing could get his shot away.

The hosts had their best chance of the first half when Byron Webster tried to head in from a Jack Powell corner, narrowly missing the target.

Magaye Gueye also had an opportunity for Millwall before the break, but saw his finish go well wide of the post to leave the scores level at the break.

The home side continued to push for the opening goal at the start of the second half when Jermaine Easter had a shot fly inches wide.

However, half-time substitute Jack Cork eventually broke the deadlock for the Premier League side when he headed in from a Dusan Tadic corner, which had been won by the midfielder forcing David Forde to tip the ball over.

Southampton could have doubled their lead just three minutes later, but Pelle's header was kept out by the upright.

Millwall made a break against the run of play as they sought to get back on level terms, but Richard Chaplow's strike failed to trouble Fraser Forster.

Pelle looked to add to Southampton's advantage with a back-heeled effort from close range, but the shot was blocked on the line, while another effort by the summer signing went just wide with 15 minutes still to play.

He continued to look Southampton's best chance of a second goal, and finally found the back of the net deep into stoppage time, collecting from a through-ball before firing past Forde.
