Preview: Shrewsbury Town vs. Burnley - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday's pre-season clash between Shrewsbury Town and Burnley, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Burnley will continue their preparations for the 2022-23 campaign when they travel to New Meadow to face Shrewsbury Town in a pre-season friendly on Friday.

This will be the first meeting between the two clubs since April 1997 when the Clarets lost 2-1 away at the Shrews in the fourth division.

Shrewsbury will be competing in League One for the eighth successive season after finishing in 18th place in the 2021-22 campaign.

Salop were at risk of relegation to the fourth tier midway through the season, but Steve Cotterill's side managed to steer themselves clear of danger and finish 10 points above the bottom four.

Shrewsbury have been busy in the transfer market this summer, adding Jordan Shipley, Chey Dunkley, Tom Bayliss, Aiden O'Brien, Taylor Moore and Julien Da Costa to their ranks, the latter two arriving on loan from Bristol City and Coventry City respectively.

While Josh Vela, David Davis, Ethan Ebanks-Landell and Shaun Whalley are notable departures from the club, Cotterill will be pleased with the business completed so far and will be hoping for further additions before their season opener away against Morecambe on July 30.

Shrewsbury played out a goalless draw with non-league outfit Telford in their first pre-season game on Tuesday, and two more warm-up fixtures are lined up against Championship duo Burnley and Cardiff City.

After their six-year stay in the Premier League came to an end last season, Burnley are looking to bounce back to the top flight under the tutelage of new head coach Vincent Kompany.

A number of key players have now left the club, including Nick Pope, James Tarkowski, Ben Mee, Wout Weghorst and Nathan Collins, but Kompany is already starting to put his stamp on the Clarets this summer, with five fresh faces coming to Turf Moor.

The Manchester City legend has recruited CJ Egan Riley and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (on loan) from his former club, while Scott Twine, Luke McNally, Samuel Bastien and Josh Cullen have all been signed on permanent deals, the latter joining from Anderlecht on Tuesday.

Burnley began their pre-season with a slender 1-0 win against League Two side Rochdale, courtesy of a strike from Twine, before suffering a 3-0 defeat against Wolverhampton Wanderers last weekend.

Kompany will be keen for his side to return to winning ways in their final warm-up match before they begin the new Championship campaign away against last season's playoff finalists Huddersfield Town on July 29.

Team News

Shrewsbury Town's Daniel Udoh celebrates scoring their first goal with Luke Leahy on January 9, 2022© Reuters

Shrewsbury boss Cotterill used 16 players in their opening warm-up fixture against Telford and he is expected to rotate his side again throughout the match on Friday.

Goalkeepers Harry Burgoyne and Jayden Bevan were the only two unused substitutes last time out, and the pair will continue to battle for the number one jersey along with first-choice stopper Marko Marosi.

Daniel Udoh and Ryan Bowman, who scored 29 goals between them last season, are both expected to feature in attack, although they will now face competition from new recruit O'Brien.

As for Burnley, Kompany is expected to name a stronger side than the one that faced Wolves last time out, which included a mix of first-team and Under-23 players.

Twine, who scored one of his 20 League One goals against Shrewsbury for MK Dons last season, is set to start in attack for the Clarets and could be supported by Ashley Barnes.

Ashley Westwood, Jay Rodriguez and Matej Vydra all remain sidelined with injuries, but Johann Berg Gudmundsson will be hoping to get some more minutes under his belt after recovering from a calf problem to play 45 minutes against Rochdale.

Shrewsbury Town possible starting lineup:
Marosi; Pennington, Moore, Dunkley; Da Costa, Bayliss, Leahy, Nurse; Shipley; O'Brien, Udoh

Burnley possible starting lineup:
Norris; Egan-Riley, Hardwood-Bellis, McNalley, Taylor; Cornet, Bastien, Brownhill, McNeil; Twine; Barnes

We say: Shrewsbury Town 1-2 Burnley

It remains to be seen whether both sides will line up with strong teams at New Meadow, but nevertheless the visitors will be regarded as the favourites for this contest.

Both teams have forwards who starred in front of goal in the third tier last season, so goals could be on the cards if they are to feature on Friday.
