The first half-chance of the afternoon arrived in the eighth minute when United defender Neill Collins met a corner from the right, but his header was high and wide of the crossbar.

Charlton's first opportunity came just before the half-hour mark when Marcus Tudgay found some space on the edge of the box, but his low effort was saved by Mark Howard.

United had the ball in the back of the net in the latter stages of the half when Conor Coady converted from close range, but the offside flag had been raised.

The first opportunity of the second period fell to the home side as Stefan Scougall found some space outside the box, but his effort was high and wide of the crossbar.

Moments later, Harry Maguire fired wide of the post as United increased the pressure in the early stages of the second 45 minutes.

Charlton's best chance of the match arrived just before the hour mark when Callum Harriott met a free kick from Tudgay, but somehow he hacked his effort wide of the post.

The Addicks were made to pay after 65 minutes when Ryan Flynn sent United into the lead after the winger converted a deep cross from Jose Baxter.

Two minutes later, United had their second as John Brayford's effort from distance found its way into the bottom corner following a big deflection.

Chances remained few and far between in the latter stages, with Charlton unable to respond as they exited the competition to the League One outfit.
