Senegal 2-0 Uruguay

A brace from Moussa Konte helps ten-man Senegal record a 2-0 win over Uruguay at Wembley

A brace from Moussa Konte helped ten-man Senegal record a 2-0 win over Uruguay at Wembley this evening

Uruguay began the match the brighter of the two teams, but they were unable to turn their domination into goals.

Their opponents punished that fact in 10th minute when Konte broke the deadlock for Senegal from inside the area.

Senegal's chances of holding out for the victory looked to have taken a blow with 30 minutes on the clock when Abdoulaye Ba was handed his marching orders as a result of his second caution in three minutes.

However, 19-year-old Konte added a second for his side eight minutes before the break when he guided a header into the right hand corner of the net from 10 yards out.

Edinson Cavani had a good chance to reduce the arrears for Uruguay in stoppage time when he rounded goalkeeper Ousmane Mane, only for his shot to be cleared by a retreating Saliou Ciss.

Uruguay came out for the second half in positive fashion as they looked to make their numerical count.

The first chance of note they carved out arrived in the 62nd minute for captain Luis Suarez. The Liverpool man was unable to get his header from a narrow angle on target though as the ball nestled into the side netting.

Suarez's side continued to dominate the contest, but they very rarely troubled the Senegal goal.

As a result, Senegal held out to give themselves four points from their opening two matches of the Games. Meanwhile, Uruguay, who play Team GB next time out, have three points to their name.
