Jan Rosenthal scored a double as SC Freiburg went to the Veltins Arena and beat Schalke 04 3-1.
From the opening whistle Schalke took control of the match and were well worth their lead when Lewis Holtby slid the ball to Jefferson Farfan and the Peruvian hit the roof of the net after 20 minutes.
However, this seemed to spur on Freiburg and by the 32nd minute they were leading.
Firstly Rosenthal controlled a long pass from Max Kruse and beat goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand, and then Rosenthal turned provider for Jonathan Schmid to make it 2-1.
The second half continued in the same vein with Schalke's defence all at sea. Freiburg grabbed their third when Rosenthal was put through again and smashed the ball home.
Schalke may have been thrown a lifeline with ten minutes remaining as Rosenburg was sent off for a second yellow card, but Dutch star Klaas Jan Huntelaar was afforded the same treatment from the ensuing free kick.
Freiburg have now leapfrogged Schalke into fifth place heading into the winter break.
