The home side came close to making the breakthrough with just five minutes on the clock, as Di Maria worked space before striking towards goal, only for his effort to come back off the crossbar.

Esteban was called into action shortly after to keep out Gareth Bale, with the Welshman driving into the Almeria box and getting a shot away which was well kept out by the keeper.

Madrid did manage to find a way through, however, thanks to Di Maria who curled the ball into the far corner and out of the reach of Esteban to make it 1-0.
