Real Madrid to appeal Copa del Rey ban

Real Madrid confirm that they will appeal the RFEF Competition Committee's decision to expel them from this season's Copa del Rey tournament.

Real Madrid have revealed that they will appeal the RFEF Competition Committee's decision to expel them from this season's Copa del Rey.

Los Blancos beat Cadiz 3-1 in the first leg of their last-32 clash on Wednesday, but the match was marred by Rafael Benitez's decision to select Denis Cheryshev, who was ineligible to take part.

Cheryshev's three yellow cards in the competition while on loan at Villarreal last season meant that he was suspended for the clash, but the Russian started and indeed scored against the lower-league team.

It was confirmed on Friday that Real Madrid had been expelled from the competition following an appeal by Cadiz, but the Spanish giants will appeal the decision.

"The competition judge acknowledges that Cheryshev was not personally notified about his ban," read a statement on Real Madrid's official website.

"Real Madrid received the competition judge's decision at 6.17pm CET and after analysing it can verify the acknowledgement that the Spanish Football Federation did not personally notify Cheryshev about his ban, which is the only way the ban can take effect, as Article 41.2 of the Disciplinary Code clearly states.

"We at Real Madrid stand by our argument and will take the appropriate action to ensure that the final outcome is favourable for the club."

Real Madrid return to La Liga action at home to Getafe on Saturday afternoon.
