Queen of the South increase pressure on Ally McCoist

Rangers suffer a 2-0 defeat against Queen of the South to slip further behind at the top of the Scottish Championship.

Rangers have suffered a 2-0 defeat against Queen of the South this evening to slip further behind at the top of the Scottish Championship amid continuing speculation over the future of manager Ally McCoist.

The first real chance of the game fell to John Baird, who dragged the ball across Steve Simonsen and wide after being found by Daniel Carmichael.

Iain Russell then found himself one on one with Simonsen but smashed his shot straight at the Rangers keeper.

At the other end, Kenny Miller shuffled into the box and fired high and over the bar as Rangers looked to establish control in the game.

It was Queen of the South who went in front, however, when Kevin Holt curved a free kick into the net from outside the box.

An excellent chance then saw the hosts miss a great opportunity to double their lead as Gavin Reilly blazed over after a ball from the left had evaded everyone in the box.

Minutes later, Rangers almost grabbed an equaliser through Bilel Mohsni, but he headed just over the bar.

After the restart, a fine save from Zander Clark denied Nicky Law from the edge of the box before Baird miscued a one-on-one with Simonsen in what was a great chance for Queen of the South to edge further in front.

Clark then saved Kris Boyd's shot from point blank range to keep Queens in the lead.

The save proved to be a crucial one as Reilly sealed Queen of the South only their fifth ever win against Rangers with a shot which went in off the post.
