Rotherham United move a point clear with Norwich City draw

Rotherham United move a point clear of the Championship drop zone with a 1-1 draw at home to Norwich City.

Rotherham United moved a point clear of the Championship drop zone with a 1-1 draw at home to Norwich City this afternoon.

Jordan Bowery's late header cancelled out Gary Hooper's opener, and Steve Evans's side now sit one place above Millwall, who were held to a 3-3 draw by Derby County.

The visitors forced a couple of early corners at a tense New York Stadium, and Lewis Grabban went down inside the area early on, but the referee waved away the tentative appeals from Norwich.

Nathan Redmond fired in an effort from range for the Canaries, but it was comfortably held by Rotherham keeper Emiliano Martinez on 12 minutes.

Bradley Johnson's clipped pass found Martin Olsson, but the Swede's shot was blocked on 20 minutes as Norwich continued to press for the opener.

However, Alex Neil's side were reduced to 10 men when Grabban was sent off for an off-the-ball incident involving Craig Morgan.

Rotherham's best first-half chance fell to Danny Ward from Matt Derbyshire's cross, but the winger's effort was narrowly wide.

The sending off forced Neil into a tactical reshuffle and Hooper was brought on in place of Wes Hoolahan just after the half-hour mark.

Hooper's introduction eventually paid dividends in the second period when the former Celtic striker lashed home a dipping half-volley just before the hour mark.

Redmond's run and cross ended with Sebastian Bassong heading just wide as Norwich looked to extend their advantage.

Derbyshire spurned a great chance to restore parity with around 10 minutes left when he missed the target from around six yards with the goal at his mercy.

Rotherham eventually equalised late on through Bowery, who nodded home Adam Hammill's cross at the back post.
