Shrewsbury Town miss out on League One top spot in Northampton Town draw

Shrewsbury Town miss out on the chance to top the League One table as they are held to a 1-1 draw at struggling Northampton Town.

Shrewsbury Town have missed out on the chance to top the League One table as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Northampton Town on Tuesday night.

The hosts took the lead just before the break at Sixfields when Joe Bunney's cross from the left flank was turned in at the back post by Shay Facey for his debut Cobblers goal.

Shrewsbury appealed for two penalties in the second half after Jon Nolan went down on the left edge of the box, before Shaun Whalley was brought down by Bunney, but the appeals were waved away.

Both sides then went down to 10 men on 65 minutes when referee Andy Davies sent off John-Joe O'Toole and Abu Ogogo following a flashpoint between the two players.

The Shrews restored parity two minutes later through Nolan, who was on hand to meet the ball as it dropped on the edge of the box and let rip with a low drive which found the back of the net.

The result keeps Shrewsbury second in the table on 75 points, one behind leaders Blackburn Rovers, while Northampton remain in the bottom four but sit level on points with 20th-placed Oldham Athletic.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN (4-4-2): O'Donnell; Moloney, Taylor, Turnbull, Bunney; Pereira (McWilliams 82'), O'Toole, Grimes, Facey; Mathis (Ariyibi 74'), Van Veen (Luckassen 59')

SHREWSBURY TOWN (4-1-4-1): Henderson; Hendrie (Payne 59'), Sadler, Nsiala, Beckles; B. Morris; Whalley, Ogogo, Nolan, Rodman; C. Morris (John-Lewis 88')
