Newport County battle back for draw

Newport County recover from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw from their home encounter against Exeter City in League Two.

Newport County fought back from two goals down to secure a share of the spoils from their home League Two encounter against Exeter City this afternoon.

Newport started the encounter brightly, but they fell behind in the 22nd minute when Darren Jones brought down Graham Cummins inside the area.

Tom Nicholls stepped up to take up the resultant penalty, which he duly converted.

In response, Newport's Chris Zebroski saw his effort cannon to safety off the crossbar, but the home side then fell even further behind in the 40th minute.

On this occasion, Cummins turned scorer as his curling effort from outside of the box found the corner for his fifth goal of the campaign.

However, Exeter's two-goal advantage was wiped out within six minutes of the restart. First, Yan Klukowski bundled the ball into the net following a long throw by Ryan Jackson, and then Max Porter powered in from distance.

Both teams created chances to score the game's fifth goal, with Matt Grimes going particularly close for Exeter when he curled his shot against the frame of the goal.

That was as near as either side came to a winner in a 2-2 draw at Rodney Parade, which has left Newport in eighth spot and Exeter 12th.
