Newcastle United are still in talks with West Bromwich Albion over a move for striker Salomon Rondon, according to a report.
The Magpies are said to be reluctant to meet the Venezuela international's release clause, which is in the region of £16.5m.
Sky Sports News suggests that Newcastle have therefore offered Dwight Gayle as part of the deal, although it is unknown whether it will be on a permanent basis or a loan switch, plus cash.
Gayle, an unused substitute in United's goalless draw with Porto on Saturday evening, scored six goals in 35 Premier League outings last season.
Newcastle are expected to announce the departure of Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham in the coming days, meanwhile, with a £20m offer being tabled by the Cottagers.
