Jonjo Shelvey returns to the Newcastle United starting XI for Saturday's Premier League clash with Southampton.

Jonjo Shelvey has been reinstated to the Newcastle United starting XI ahead of Saturday's Premier League home clash with Southampton.

The England midfielder missed last weekend's 2-0 defeat at Liverpool with a knee problem, but returned to training in midweek and will line up against the Saints at St James' Park.

Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez also return to the starting lineup, while Mikel Merino, Christian Atsu and Jacob Murphy all drop down to the bench.

Southampton, meanwhile, make two changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Stoke City last week.

James Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg replace Josh Sims and Oriol Romeu, who both drop to the bench.

Newcastle United: Dubravka; Yedlin, Lascelles, Lejeune, Dummett; Ritchie, Shelvey, Diame, Kenedy; Perez, Gayle

Southampton: McCarthy; Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand; Lemina, Hojbjerg; Redmond, Ward-Prowse, Tadic; Carrillo
