Alan Shearer has sympathy for Newcastle United boss John Carver

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer says that he sympathises with John Carver's situation at the club, with the Magpies going into the final day of the Premier League season not safe from relegation.

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has admitted that while he sympathises with John Carver's situation at the club, the Premier League table does not lie.

Carver has come under fire from supporters after the team's run of nine defeats from 10 games, which leaves them two points outside the relegation zone with one game left to play.

Shearer, who was in charge of the Magpies when they last fell out of the top flight in 2009, has said that he knows what Carver is going through and remains hopeful that things go Newcastle's way on the final day of the season.

"I know what John's going through, I've been there myself and it's not a nice feeling," Shearer told The Chronicle.

"The table never lies after 38 games and the three teams that do get relegated deserve to be relegated, so you can't really argue.

"I'm just like the rest of the many thousands here in Newcastle (hoping) that Newcastle can pull something from somewhere to give the fans something to shout about on the last day."
